FPL FiberNet and TerreNAP Data Center sign agreement for NAP of the Americas

April 24, 2001

MIAMI, Fla. -- FPL FiberNet today announced the signing of an agreement withTerreNAP Data Center, a subsidiary of Terremark Worldwide, Inc., to provide fiber-optic connectivity to TerreNAP Data Center for the NAP of the Americas. The NAP of the Americas, located in Miami, will be operational in its permanent facility starting the third quarter of 2001.

A network access point (NAP) is a location where Internet service providers (ISPs) interconnect networks to facilitate the exchange of Internet traffic. This giant switching station reroutes Internet traffic when it becomes clogged or congested and increases the speed of communications on the information super highway.

Completion of this agreement with TerreNAP Data Center places FPL FiberNet at the center of Internet activity to and from the NAP of the Americas. FPL FiberNet will be a provider of fiber to NAP customers requiring connectivity and cross-connectivity throughout the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia.

"This is a tremendous development for FPL FiberNet because it means we will be able to service local, regional, national and international carriers needing bandwidth and capacity to and from the network access point. FPL FiberNet customers at the NAP of the Americas will include Internet service providers, application service providers, international cable-carriers and other telecommunications companies throughout the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean," said Neil Flynn, president of FPL FiberNet.

The NAP of the Americas, a TerreNAP Data Center, is the fifth Tier-1 NAP in the world. Tier-1 NAPs interconnect Tier-1 ISPs. Tier-1 ISPs are recognized for having the most extensive network infrastructure used for Internet traffic. TerreNAP Data Center is a subsidiary of Terremark Worldwide, Inc., a provider of Internet infrastructure and managed services and the owner and operator of the NAP of the Americas. This NAP is the first carrier-neutral Tier-1 NAP, and the first one housed in a facility built specifically for a NAP.

"The NAP of the Americas is a tremendous business opportunity for FPL FiberNet. Beyond that, the NAP will be of significant economic benefit to the South Florida community," said David Eckmann, director of business development for FPL FiberNet and member of the management committee of the NAP.

"FPL FiberNet is a leading local access customer and a valuable member of the seven-member management committee of a consortium of more than 100 telecommunications companies, whose purpose is to support the development of the NAP of the Americas," said Brian Goodkind, chief operating officer of Terremark Worldwide, Inc. "We are delighted to add FPL FiberNet to our group of distinguished customers in the NAP of the Americas," Goodkind said.
